About ChateauDif.com

An independent guide to one small island — and the city and sea around it.

ChateauDif.com exists to answer the questions people actually ask before visiting the Château d'If: how to get there, what the boats cost, what happens when the Mistral blows, what there is to see inside, how to combine it with the Frioul islands, and where to stay in Marseille.

What we cover

The Château d'If itself — its history, its prisoners real and fictional, and the practicalities of a visit — together with the Frioul islands, the parts of Marseille a visitor naturally combines with it (the Vieux-Port, Notre-Dame de la Garde, the MuCEM, Le Panier and the Corniche), the Calanques and the best day trips. The practical pages cover transport, seasons, itineraries and accommodation.

How we work

Practical details are checked against official and primary sources — the Centre des monuments nationaux, which manages the fortress, the public shuttle operator, the Calanques National Park, Marseille's tourist office and transport network — and reviewed regularly. Tour ratings, review counts and “from” prices come directly from GetYourGuide; hotel links go to Booking.com.

Boat timetables, fares, opening hours and access rules change from season to season. Where something is liable to change we say so, and we link to live information rather than printing figures that will date. We are not affiliated with the monument, the boat operators or any public body mentioned.

How the site is funded

The guide is free to read. When you book a tour or a hotel through our links we may earn a commission, at no cost to you. That never decides what we recommend — see our affiliate disclosure.

Plan your Château d'If trip

Summer boats fill up. Book before you go.

In July and August the crossings to If and Frioul and the Calanques cruises run full, and the Mistral can cancel a day at short notice. Reserve early and keep a spare day — most tours can be cancelled free of charge.
