Marseille rewards a few days. These plans put the Château d'If first — so there is time to try again if the wind cancels the boats — and build the rest of the city around it.
One day: If and Frioul
- Morning: first shuttle from the Vieux-Port to the Château d'If; an hour or so in the fortress and on the terraces.
- Late morning: next boat on to Port du Frioul; walk to the Hôpital Caroline.
- Afternoon: lunch at the harbour, a swim at Saint-Estève, boat back to the Old Port.
- Evening: aperitif on the Old Port, sunset from the Palais du Pharo or the Vallon des Auffes.

Two days: add the city
- Day 1: If and Frioul, as above.
- Day 2 morning: the fish market on the Quai des Belges, then up into Le Panier and the Vieille Charité; down to the Cathédrale de la Major.
- Day 2 afternoon: the MuCEM and Fort Saint-Jean, then bus 60 up to Notre-Dame de la Garde for the late light over the bay and the islands.
- Evening: dinner in the Vallon des Auffes or a sunset cruise.

Small-group day trip from €99 From Marseille: Cassis & Aix-en-Provence Full-Day Tour

- The Route des Crêtes to Cassis
- The fishing port of Cassis
- The Cours Mirabeau in Aix
Three days: add the Calanques or Cassis
- Days 1–2: as above.
- Day 3: a half-day Calanques boat trip from the Old Port in the morning, and a lazy afternoon on the Corniche beaches; or a day in Cassis with a boat to En-Vau.
- Alternative: Aix-en-Provence if you prefer markets, fountains and museums.
If the Mistral blows
Swap days: do the city or Aix-en-Provence while the wind blows, and go to the islands when it drops. The MuCEM, the Vieille Charité museums and the basilica are all good wind-proof choices — and from Notre-Dame de la Garde you can at least see the Château d'If.
Where to base yourself
For these plans, stay near the Vieux-Port, where the boats leave and the metro meets the bus lines to the Corniche and Notre-Dame de la Garde.
