Le Panier

The oldest quarter of Marseille, above the Old Port

Le Panier is where Marseille started: the Greek city of Massalia stood on this hill above the north side of the Old Port. It has been rebuilt many times — most brutally in 1943, when the occupying forces dynamited the old quarter around the port — but the upper part survives as a maze of narrow streets, stairways and little squares, its houses painted in ochre, pink and sienna.

For generations it was a district of sailors, fishermen and immigrants from Corsica, Italy and beyond. Today it mixes long-standing residents with artisans, galleries, cafés and some of the best street art in the city, and it makes a perfect morning walk before an afternoon boat to If.

What to see and do: Le Panier

La Vieille Charité

A 17th-century almshouse built around a courtyard with three tiers of arcades and a domed chapel, designed by Pierre Puget. It now houses museums of archaeology and of African, Oceanic and Amerindian art.

Place de Lenche and the stairways

Wander down from the Vieille Charité through the Place de Lenche and the stepped lanes towards the port, stopping in the small squares.

Soap, santons and street art

Little shops sell Marseille soap, Provençal santon figurines and local crafts; murals and stencils cover many walls.

Cathédrale de la Major

On the seaward edge of Le Panier, the huge striped cathedral overlooks the docks and the MuCEM.

How to get to Le Panier

  • Walk up from the Vieux-Port (Hôtel de Ville side) — about five minutes to the first streets.
  • Metro Vieux-Port or Joliette; tram T2 to Sadi-Carnot or République-Dames.
  • A guided walking tour explains the layers of history.

Insider tips

  • Wear flat shoes — the streets are steep and some are stepped.
  • Mornings and early evenings are the most pleasant times; middays in summer are hot and still.
  • The Panier is part of a big, lively city: keep an eye on your belongings.
