MuCEM & Fort Saint-Jean

A lattice-clad museum and a medieval fort at the harbour mouth

When Marseille was European Capital of Culture in 2013, it opened a new museum at the mouth of the Old Port: the MuCEM, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations, designed by Rudy Ricciotti. The building is a square glass box wrapped in a lattice of dark fibre-reinforced concrete, standing on the old J4 pier and linked by a slender footbridge to the ramparts of Fort Saint-Jean.

The fort has guarded the northern side of the harbour entrance since the Middle Ages; it was rebuilt in the 1660s under Louis XIV. Its terraces and the Mediterranean garden inside the walls are open to walk, and together with the MuCEM roof they give wide views over the sea towards the islands.
